This test is run when a gallstone or partial blockage of the bile duct is possible. An iodine dye is given orally for absorption and concentration of the dye to settle in the gallbladder. An X-ray of the organ is then taken the next morning to discern stones of either cholesterol or calcium. Since fewer than 50 per cent of gallstones are calcified, they are not easily picked up on X-ray. Another test, which would have to be decided upon by a doctor, is the intravenous cholangiography (IVC), given by feeding iodine intravenously. In most cases, though, the oral ingestion of iodine works.
